Haha I have embraced the high socks because they actually are more functional, they don’t fall down! But I also can’t do low rise jeans (high rise forever) and now I’ve switched to wide leg jeans I don’t think I can go back to the skinny jeans look and feel. Or jeggings remember when we thought the blend of leggings and jeans were cool 🤣. I’ve yet to embrace Birkenstock or crocs but I’m assured both are very comfortable.

I’m with you - I have wide leg culottes at the moment and I’m obsessed. They’re so comfy!!

But yes, jeggings are also on my black list. Someone told me about flared leggings with other day day and that’s a hard pass from me 🙅‍♀️

Haha I want some flared leggings! They look so fun on

Hahahaha you do you!

I keep having this experience where I’m now the experienced mom in the room, and even though I guess I’m still young by some standards, it makes me feel old. I’m not in my twenties anymore, that’s for sure, which I’m mostly only reminded of when I am around people who are. I feel like if I’m going to feel old, at least I should know what I’m doing, but I guess we got sold a bill of goods about how being a grown up worked.

And then there’s the ins and outs of pregnancy and postpartum clothing, and gosh. I am so sick of my maternity clothes, but all the new ones are weird and expensive…

Hahaha I feel this. I always thought grown ups knew it all but as I get older I realise all the things I don’t know, and what I do know, I’m forgetting! Pregnancy clothes are a nightmare, rotating the same three things over and over. My friend who has five kids and is super fashionable passed on a bag of maternity clothes when I was pregnant. It was legit a lifesaver.

I refuse to wear low rise jeans too! And also, Team Birkenstock for sure. I wear orthotic inserts in my shoes now. 😂😭 I have SO much foot pain. This was a fun post with a good point!

Awww! Sucks about the foot pain! For me, it’s hip pain. So glad you liked it! 💛

I’m neither birkenstocks or crocs but Team Chacos!

Expand full comment

I would NEVER (again) wear low rise jeans. Or crocs. During my last pregnancy I book and bought some chacos which really make me look like a mom, but they did make my feet feel better and I somehow think they’re kind of cute, so there’s that.

I never thought I’d do wide leg jeans, but I love them now. In fact only one pair of jeans I own now are truly skinny jeans, and they are my least favorite pair 😂

Hahahaha low rise jeans can stay in the 00s. Wide leg jeans are delightful! I have wide leg culottes and they are lovely. Love that the Chacos made you a Mum 😂🙌🏼

I’m really just leaning into it hard 😂 found this post really relatable haha, I want to age gracefully but without giving up on fun aesthetic. There are a few older ladies in my church whose style I’m definitely going to steal from in the future

Awww thank you!!! I’m so encouraged by the response to this, that I’m not the only one! 💛

Thanks for the fun read! I'm an elder millennial, but have been wearing crew socks for years! Not because it's fashionable, but because I wear them with boots. Ha! I'm team birks and crocs. I feel like I refuse to wear a lot of things, but I can't think of any at the moment. But there are many times I think someone looks so cute in something, but I know I would look like an absolute tool in it.

Yay! Thanks! It’s pretty funny, but over here Blundstones work boots are now in fashion too, but all the farmers have been wearing them forever with crew socks!

😂 I enjoyed reading this! Ankle socks for me, I have muscular calves so I feel like crew socks look ridiculous on me and they slide down unless they are super tight. But definitely team Birki’s, I live in Switzerland so that is pretty standard procedure across age groups here. Kids in crocs, 100%! Our family has gotten into barefoot shoes, wide toe box and no drop. My husband even runs in those toe shoes, with socks to match🙈. While I firmly stand behind our choices on an intellectual level and my feet and gait have improved, I have accepted that so blatantly choosing function over aesthetics makes me old😅

Your last sentence actually made me laugh out loud! This is so great, thanks for sharing. My Dad firmly mocked sandals all my life, especially Birkenstocks, but I have them now and I never want to give them up. I am so comfortable! Good to know I will eternally be in fashion in Switzerland!!

I relate to this SO much! I still don't know what to do about socks and have managed to avoid wearing them very much since even though it's fall here, it's been in the 70s and 80s, so I can get away with just wearing sandals still. And I had no idea there were wildflowers called eggs and bacon, but I love that!

I am with you 100% on never wearing low-rise jeans or cargo pants. Gross. I wear cheap versions of Birks and love them but have yet to own any Crocs.

Hahahah thanks so much! Birks are delightful!!

I feel this in my bones 😂 never going back to low rise or skinny jeans. I am actually on team birks and crocs so I’m not sure what that says about me. 😆

Expand full comment

Hahaha probably that you have older kids and know how to wear the crocs 😆

I refuse to wear Crocs, especially Crocs with crew socks. Like you, I fell in love with my birks but I draw the line at Crocs. I just don't get it. Also like you, I will never wear low rise jeans again. No ma'am they don't do it for my mum bod. I'm even finally giving out on skinny jeans in general 😮

Also... I still wear ankle socks. It just works better for my short legs. Crew socks make my legs look even shorter, I just can't...

As you can tell by my two separate restacks I really loved this post. I feel ya in many ways and I LOVE that I got to read about Australian plants and the Stirling ranges 🙌🏻

Awww thanks Kym!! I also gave up on skinny jeans. It’s been so fun wearing wide leg culottes (that are basically pants because I’m short) postpartum! They’re so forgiving hahaha and they have a stretchy band at the back!

Yes for wide leg 🙌🏻 esp postpartum! Sounds so comfy!

Oh my goodness I don't think I have ever related to anything more. What is it with socks these days!!! Seriously! Thank you for the reminder of freedom in Christ. Freedom from sock crises haha. I am also team Birkenstock til the end!! (But, it should be noted, Team Crocs for my kids!)

Hahahah that’s great! Thanks! I am thinking about Crocs for the kids. 😆😆

This whole post made my Millennial Mum heart really happy! 😂 I’m team ankle socks and would never ever touch low rise/bumster jeans ever again. They say “Asians don’t raisin” so I’m totally fine with looking millennial so people don’t mistake me for a 12 year old. 🥲

Hahahaha this is great! Asians don’t raisin! I also have a baby face and it’s taken to my kid-30s for people to not think I’m a teenager. It’s finally paying off!!!!

Haha congrats 🎉 you get it!! I just want to be taken seriously!! BTW did you get a chance to read one of my older posts where I also write about ankle socks (and getting suspended from school) https://open.substack.com/pub/heiditaiwrites/p/sorry-i-deleted-my-blog-i-got-suspended
