Summer starts by exploding
into purple. Jacaranda heralds
its arrival by casting delicate
purple flowers on the path.
Even clouds have escaped the heat
of a bleached sky. The dregs
are white paint on a brush scraped
across the blue. The children scale
the mulberry tree, with deep royal
purple-stained faces and hands
and shirts. Lavender stalks sway
in the breeze, unperturbed by
the bees. Purple wisteria petals
perfume the patio as we clink our gin
and tonics, dotted with frozen
blueberries. Summer is here.
Those who have eyes to see
nature proclaiming the coming
of the King’s birthday, let them see.
